I’m curious….

Polls are closed today. Thanks to those who voted. And, especially thanks to those who left comments when the answer choices weren’t ideal. I think the comments are as valuable as the results!

If you’re seeing this for the first time, you can still “cast” your vote by commenting, if you like.

This blog is still new, in blog-years. So, I have two burning questions for you, kind readers, that I’m hoping you’ll take the time to answer.

Every Wednesday, I post a flash fiction piece or a short essay based on one word. You can read yesterday’s here. Then, tell me:

And, while Jane Friedman wrote a great post on “5 things that make [her] stop reading websites &  blogs,” she didn’t mention post length.

If you’re a blog jumper, tell me:

It’s in the Cards

I often wish I did, some days I pretend I do, and other days I deny that I don’t have ESP.

As a wife, I play one card: “I know exactly what you’re thinking.”

As a mother, I toss out another: “Careful, I have eyes in the back of my head.”

As a writer, I long for the reveal of one more card: “Will I or won’t I publish that book?”

Welcome to Wednesday’s word from Wordsmith.org:

vatic. adjective: Of or related to a prophet or a prophecy: prophetic.

In late December, I posted my writer’s vision for 2010. Today, I offer a flash fiction piece on how my biggest dream might unfold (were I younger and single and living in a bigger city. But, still…).

Marcie looked at her watch.

“8:30. Dammit. I’ll be late.”

She still had one eye to lather with mascara, but her lashes would have to wait. She grabbed her bag and ran out the door. Running down the stairs, she barely let her feet touch the steps to make up for the two minutes she lost during her post-shower dry heaves. When she grabbed onto the railing and rounded the stairwell corner at the mid-floor landing, her bag swung in an arc out to her side. The stack of papers inside slid into perfect alignment from the force of gravity during her turn.

Do What you Imagine

Wednesday’s word of the day, quantum (from Wordsmith.org) illustrates, in one word, my perception of time lately: there isn’t much of it.

Instead of crafting a quick story for a Wednesday’s Word post, I searched for a quote that might give color to the word. I found one that indirectly speaks to my desire to write and the courage it takes to keep me writing, even when the inspiration flickers out.

Today’s word:

quantum. noun.
1. A quantity or amount.
2. A portion.
3. A large amount.
4. The smallest amount of something that can exist independently.

Doing is a quantum leap from imagining. Thinking about swimming isn’t much like actually getting in the water. Actually getting in the water can take your breath away. The defense force inside of us wants us to be cautious, to stay away from anything as intense as a new kind of action. Its job is to protect us, and it categorically avoids anything resembling danger. But it’s often wrong. Anything worth doing is worth doing too soon.”

— Barbara Sher, American business owner, career counselor, author.

A new year approaches. And,2010 calls for fresh goals but demands repeat determination.

Don’t just imagine, Someday I’d like to be a writer.

Write.

Because “anything worth doing is worth doing…” now.
